Bypass work is poised to finish

A NEW bypass which is a significant part of the A80 upgrade will soon be fully completed - in what marks a major milestone for the £320 million project

The northbound section of the new road, stretching five miles between Stepps and Mollinsburn, opened on Monday - and the soutbound section is scheduled to be opened on Sunday.

As we reported, Scotland’s transport minister Keith Brown visited the site on Wednesday and was pleased to note that the bypass was completed well ahead of schedule.

He said: “Taking traffic into this new section will mean less traffic through the communities that live along the existing A80. When fully completed in the autumn, the upgrade will improve journey times, reliability and safety for people using this busy route, and will save motorists up to 15 minutes each way between Stepps and Haggs.”

Hugh O’Connor, contractor HMG’s general manager, added: “The opening of this new section will allow us to progress other important road sections, enabling the completion of the complex Mollinsburn interchange, the key section of this project.”

The speed cameras which line the main route will also be installed in the new bypass, enforcing a 40 mph speed limit.
