As forensics and assessors analysed the scene of Saturday’s 4 am blaze, the smell of smoke was unmistakeable, but 48 hours after the fire the bar area was fully operational. Accommodation is still being offered in the cottages outwith the main building -although staff have been unable to provide food for guests. All functions have been cancelled in the short-term.

The fire was discovered by a member of staff who declined to be interviewed but whose quick-thinking led to a swift and by-the-book evacuation of the premises. An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.

Duty manager Jackie McMillan said: “Yes it is devastating but we will just have to try and get on with things.

“And we are all doing our best to roll our sleeves up and pitch in,” she added.

Staff have drawn inspiration from their version of the much-seen World War Two poster which they have affixed to the front door. It bears the motto: “Keep calm, the Cary is Carrying On.”

“That’s something we are trying to do – we just have to try to move on,” said Jackie.

Thankfully nobody was hurt in the blaze which was extinguished over a tense 15 minute period by firefighters from Denny, Larbert and Cumbernauld.

Station Commander Eddie Finnieston said:“This was a serious kitchen fire requiring a quick and effective response from firefighters. Crews in breathing apparatus led four residents to safety and tackled the flames, which had taken hold in a kitchen and could have easily spread to other parts of the hotel.

“Their efforts ensured the fire was quickly brought under control, minimising damage and preventing casualties. They can be extremely proud of their actions,” he added.
