CCTV puts the focus on trouble hot-spot

CCTV cameras are helping police crack down on rowdy youths at a notorious trouble hot-spot.

The cameras have recently been installed at Abronhill Shopping Centre, where outbreaks of violence and youth disorder have become commonplace.

Chief Inspector Brian Connel, of Cumbernauld Police, has noticed a difference in the short time the closed circuit cameras have been in operation.

He said: "CCTV was put in there because that was a focal point for incidents and community concern. We've had to put as many officers as we can afford into these areas.

"Now, when we're getting complaints from the public, we've got the ability to ID the individuals responsible. If we didn't have CCTV that would be a lot more difficult."

Earlier this month, a 30-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were attacked by a group of 10 youths on Larch Road, adjacent to the shopping centre. Both sustained injuries to the head and body.

The gang comprised both male and female members aged between 14 and 16.

The CCTV system captured clear images of the assault, which lead to all 10 being arrested and given extremely strict bail conditions at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

Chief Inspector Connel continued: "CCTV was vital in assisting us to ID those responsible.

"Catching the people responsible and getting tough penalties sends out a really strong message."

An Abronhill resident, who asked not to be named, said: "It is reassuring having the CCTV.

"Ultimately it will stop them causing trouble, because they'll know that they are going to be caught. It can only help."
