Challenge puts Andyon a high

A FORMER soldier is training for a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa.

Andrew Geelan (46), of Abronhill, served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and saw action in the 1991 Gulf War. He remains involved with the military and is a member of 6 SCOTS, the Territorial Army for the South of Scotland.

Andrew is one of 18 people to have volunteered to climb the world’s fourth-highest mountain in Tanzania, to raise money supporting veterans and their families via the Royal Regiment of Scotland Regimental Association.

Andy said: “I’ve done walks in such places as Cyprus and Ascension Island for charities in the past, but this is the biggest challenge yet as we’ll be doing the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis every day for five days. The team is building up to it through endurance walks around parks and up Ben Lomond and Ben Nevis, and we’re hoping to raise as much money as possible.”

Andrew has distributed sponsor forms around various business premises in Cumbernauld and further information on the work of the Royal Regiment of Scotland Regimental Association can also be found. See http://www.justgiving.com/rhqscots for details.
