Chapelgreen celebrates 50 years

The school first opened its doors in the August, but the official opening ceremony was in February, 1963.

The children have marked the event by learning all about the school’s past, and there was also an special exhibition held in honour of the birthday.

Headteacher Barbara McNaughton explained: “The children in the school and nursery have been learning about what school and life was like in the 60s, compared to today and learning about the history of the school.

“Primary 1 to 3 have been doing the ‘When Gran was a Girl’ topic.

“Within that, they have been learning about what school was like in the 60s compared with school life today.

“The P3/4s did a buddy task with the nursery and interviewed an old headteacher of the school whose grandson attends the nursery.

“P1/3 also interviewed Mrs Davidson, our classroom assistant and some parents about their time at our school.

“Their memories were very interesting and great for teaching about school life. P1/2 watched clips from old children’s TV shows and voted on the ones they liked the best and then made TVs with the shows on them.

“Primary 4 to 7 have been learning about each of the decades from the 60s to the present. They have been learning about fashion, music, toys and world events of each decade. They have also learned a dance craze from each decade, as well as a couple of Beatles songs.”
