Church celebrates ‘early Christmas present’

A HISTORIC Cumbernauld church has been handed a lavish early Christmas present – after scooping a £67,000 grant from Historic Scotland to secure its roof.

And Cumbernauld Old Parish Church looks set to gain a further £44,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund – which will also be used to ensure that the imposing Kirk is once again wind and watertight for future generations.

The Cumbernauld Village-based church was one of just 11 places of worship in Scotland selected to receive this cash injection.

The church dates from the 12th century but the current building dates back to the 18th century. Its roof in particular is described as being ‘’in very poor condition’’

Reverend Catriona Ogilvie said: “We are absolutely delighted to hear about this award – it came as a wonderful Christmas present for us.”
