Cole is king of the road

A former Cumbernauld schoolboy who is just 11 years old is one of the youngest pilgrims to cross a legendary route in Spain.

Cole Stannard who attended Cumbernauld Primary School before moving to France with his family in 2007 is walking the Way of Saint James.

This will take him to the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela

The former Ratho Drive resident whose proud grandparents Kathleen and Richard live in Westerwood is being accompanied by his uncle from London on the 480 mile route.

Cole who is now a fluent French speaker will finish the monumental trek in Mid August before flying back to London where he will spend a month with his family.

But he has plenty of ground to cover before then, at a rate of 15 miles per day.

Grandfather Richard (78) of The Links said: “His uncle has done the route three times in the last three years. Cole heard all about and wanted to do it himself. He then asked his dad if he could go.’’

Young adventurer Cole now lives with IT consultant dad Michael and teacher mum Suzanne plus sister Molly (13) and brother Finn (8) in Central Nice.
