In this column, local community activist Adam Smith highlights some of the events and activities that have taken place in and around Cumbernauld over the last week, while pointing out some events to look forward to in the week ahead.

Yesterday, Tuesday , January 8, Cumbernauld Community Forum held their first meeting of 2013. Attendees heard from the Forum’s health sub-group on work being done to improve healthcare provision in the area, and from a number of local community groups. Cumbernauld Community Forum will also be pledging their support to the ‘see me’ campaign, working to end the stigma and discrimination of mental ill-health, at a ceremony in the New Town Hall from 7pm on Tuesday January 29.

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 10, Cumbernauld College will be opening their doors for a course information event from 4pm to 6pm, and anyone who is interested in applying for a full-time or part-time course at the College is welcome to attend.

On Monday, January 14, the Scottish Parliament’s Local Government and Regeneration Committee will be conducting a fact-finding visit to Cumbernauld to discuss the forthcoming Community Empowerment and Renewal Bill and the High Hedges (Scotland) Bill. Local community groups and individuals who are interested in attending the consultation event at the Westerwood Hotel from 1pm to 4pm should e-mail [email protected] to book their place, with transport available from Cumbernauld Town Centre for those who require it.

Also on Monday, January 14, the Friends of Cumbernauld House Park will be holding their latest meeting to discuss proposed improvements to the largest town park in North Lanarkshire. The group are currently progressing plans for an excavation of the former Cumbernauld Castle, and construction of a perimeter path network. The group will be meeting in the lower bar of Cumbernauld Theatre from 7pm and all are welcome to attend.
