Condorrat furore continues after club members say yes to Tesco

Members of Condorrat Social Club have controversially agreed to plans that could pave the way for a third Tesco in Cumbernauld.

The fledgling project which has not been submitted to planners at NLC won the approval of most members.

For they voted 137 to 34 in favour of the project. The plans could see a partial redevelopment of the premises as a Tesco Express is created on-site. The club has declined to comment.

However Condorrat Community Council who staged a demonstration against the move was more forthcoming.Chairperson Stacey Egan said: “Our campaign against the proposal is already well underway and has been met with great support from the community.

She said: “The result of the vote is not a set back, We will continue to fully explore every avenue open to us to halt these plans from going forward and affecting the viability and vitality of our main street,’’ she said.

Meanwhile a Tesco spokesman said: “We’re very pleased. A Tesco Express would bring new jobs, investment and shopping choice to Condorrat, and we look forward to putting in a planning application in due course”.
