Condorrat man's hobby will help Ronan coin it in

A Condorrat coin collector has donated four pieces from his priceless collection to help Orangemen raise cash for a disabled young Celtic fan.

John Burke from Lomond Drive has a vast collection of historic cash which stems chiefly from his interest in Roman history.

Within that collection are four coins from a later period, namely 1690 depicting William of Orange.

Grandfather John is now donating these to a fundraiser being held by the Wishaw-based County Flute Band.

This will enable members to raise the remaining £500 to send swimmer Ronan Cusack to the Special Olympics Summer Games in Sheffield next year.

Ronan is autistic and has a learning disability but has trained hard with Clyde Valley Beavers at Wishaw baths.

It costs £500 to send every child to the games and a whopping £200,000 has to be raised to send the 389 athletes who are representing the west of Scotland.

His fundraising effort caught John’s eye in the press.

John said: “I felt for Ronan and was touched by his story.

“So I decided that the coins should be donated to raise money for his fund because I know they will be in demand.

“I am not an Orangeman myself but I felt that I could help.

Some of our readers will recognise John as a community activist for Condorrat Tenants & Residents Association who has helped various local schools tend to their gardens.

The children are often equally interested in the magnificent coins he’s displayed.
