Convoys to Calais are still on course

The East Ren Convoy to Calais campaign has been gaining momentum as Eastwood residents collect donations of clothing, food and basic supplies, to be carted to Calais at the end of October.

The supplies — being collected until Oct 23 — will be distributed to those in need at the camp known as The Jungle.

The group’s latest fundraising drive took the form of a quiz night on Saturday, with a capacity crowd filling Clarkston Hall and raising more than £3,000.

With another £2,500 in donations on the project’s online crowdfund page, the Convoy to Calais will soon be underway.

Quizmaster Peter Buchanan said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown. The support we’ve had from businesses, schools and individuals will make a big difference to the lives of refugees.”

Peter added: “If anyone can spare a van from Oct 29 for four days, we would be very grateful if they would contact the Convoy on 07756 856 300.”

Shawlands bar Jayz has also played a part in caring for the refugees, having acted as a collection point for Wishaw to Calais and collected more than 40 bin bags filled with essentail items. For the bar’s second birthday bash, a fundraiser was organised to collect for Medical Frontiers and Save the Children. The day, organised by barmaid Alison Mailey, involved a Cyclethon, courtesy of Corner Bikes owner Stephen Steele, as well as face-painting, games and fete-themed stalls.

Together with a busking session by Glasgow band Papa Shandy and The Drams, the bar has raised £500, and Jayz owner Gary thanked all involved.
