The dangers of counterfeit goods

The perils of dodgy electronics and other fake goods are being highlighted in Cumbernauld Town Centre.

Police, firefighters and trading standards officers have teamed up to show off examples of often dangerous fake goods they have recovered and answer questions from the public about avoiding getting conned and making sure your home is safe.

From convincing-looking hair straighteners filled with substandard, potentially lethal components to bootleg cigarettes, the team are showing off all manner of confiscated items and helping to raise awareness of how to avoid buying a cheap knockoff instead of the real thing.

Trading Standards officers and police have recently run several joint operations to seize counterfeit goods while firefighters can confirm the lack of proper safeguards in bogus electronics has caused numerous fires across North Lanarkshire, often resulting in injury.

Chief Inspector David Bruce, the senior police officer for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, said: “Everyone loves a bargain especially at Christmas time but unfortunately it’s a time when fraudsters try to cash in.”

Many people have already taken the opportunity to get expert advice and the team are also going to be in Cumbernauld Shopping Centre tomorrow (Saturday, November 28) from 10am to 3pm.
