Councillor Tom Johnston believes questions need to be answered over an incident in Cumbernauld Village which saw over 40 vehicles have their tyres slashed.

A 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were arrested after more than 43 vehicles were targeted between 9pm and 11.30pm of Friday, April 6, causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The girl will appear at court at a later date, while both were reported to the Procurator Fiscal and the Children’s Reporters.

Councillor Johnston, who represents the Cumbernauld East ward, has written to the police and North Lanarkshire Council’s Social Work department.

He said: “Many residents will be considerably out of pocket as a result of this mass-vandalism incident.

“I have written to Social Work regarding issues such as recompense to the vehicle owners should any council link emerge following proceedings.

“I have raised 15 questions about this incident, and while I acknowledge the matter remains sub-judice so we are legally obliged to talk in terms of ‘allegations’ and this appears to have been an exceptional “one-off”, Village residents will be demanding answers and looking for action to prevent any repeat of this type of wide-scale wreckage.”
