Councillor Johnston, who represents the Cumbernauld East ward, has written to the police and North Lanarkshire Council’s Social Work department.

He said: “Many residents will be considerably out of pocket as a result of this mass-vandalism incident.

“I have written to Social Work regarding issues such as recompense to the vehicle owners should any council link emerge following proceedings.

“I have raised 15 questions about this incident, and while I acknowledge the matter remains sub-judice so we are legally obliged to talk in terms of ‘allegations’ and this appears to have been an exceptional “one-off”, Village residents will be demanding answers and looking for action to prevent any repeat of this type of wide-scale wreckage.”
