Heartless thief stole food earmarked for vulnerable people in Cumbernauld

A volunteer army that is on a round-the-clock quest to help vulnerable Cumbernauld folk has been hit by a devastating theft.

The tireless emergency outreach work of Carbrain and Hillcrest Community Council has seen the delivery of cooked meals and other essentials to approximately 100 people several times a week.

Yet this tight knit community, which includes a sheltered housing complex, has been left shellshocked after a lock-up garage in Glenhove Road being used as a storage area was broken into and £200 worth of food taken.

The shattering discovery was made last Tuesday (May 12) when one of the volunteers went to start operations for the day.

Secretary Lyndsay Thomson revealed that residents had valiantly come to the rescue after an appeal was made to on social media.

She explained: “When the local community found out what had happened donations started to flood in.

“We are all disgusted by the act and humbled by the reaction of our local community .

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank anyone who donated to replace what was stolen.”

Communities Inspector Neil MacLeod said: “A considerable amount of volunteer work has been going on relating to the collation and distribution of these supplies and much of this commendable work has been undone by this incident.

“Police are treating the incident as theft by housebreaking and our enquiry is ongoing.”
