High value quantity of booze stolen in Cumbernauld

Police have confirmed that £250,000 worth of brandy was stolen from a trailer parked in a Cumbernauld industrial estate.

The incident happened late on Sunday, January 17 at the headquarters of trucking company ARR Craib in Limekilns Road.

It emerged that the thieves hooked a trailer load full of bottles onto a HGV tractor unit and drove away with the contents.

However, police have also confirmed that the getaway only went so far.

They have stressed that the stolen cargo was recovered the following day just off the M6, south of the border.

It is not known however why exactly this operation was abandoned at this later stage.

Chief Inspector David Bruce explained: “Shortly before midnight, thieves overcame the perimeter security fence of the transport storage area.

“A flatbed trailer with a container of Cognac brandy was stolen by a tractor unit which had been brought to the scene by thieves.

“As a result of police enquiries, all the property was recovered in the following day in the North of England.

“The cognac was due to be delivered to various locations.”

The chief inspector has however admitted that the search for the culprits is ongoing.

“Enquiries to detect the offenders continue and anyone who can provide information to the police can do so by calling 101. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be called free and in confidence on 0800 555 111.”

A number of industrial estates in the Cumbernauld area have acted as a target for thieve recently.

Carefully targeted raids have seen the theft of catalytic converters from the Swords factory and metal thieves have also been at large in a search for items like copper wiring.

Van thefts have also been an issue in a number of locations.
