The victim made his way to a friend’s house nearby where police were called.

He was taken to University Hospital Monklands Hospital for treatment to a facial injury and later released.

From enquiries carried out by police so far, it is understood that a woman walking a dog passed the two suspects just before they approached the victim.

Detective Constable Shemain Murphy, from Coatbridge CID, said: “This despicable individual assaulted the victim for no apparent reason and he has been left with a significant facial injury.

“In particular I would appeal to the woman who passed the suspects prior to the incident to please get in touch. It is believed they made have made some sort of comment to her as she walked by.

“I would also appeal to anyone who was in the surrounding area, including the nearby bar, and may have saw or heard anything suspicious to come forward.”
