Crunch meeting on House

THE FATE of historic Cumbernauld House looks set to be sealed next Tuesday, March 22, with planners finally discussing its future at a crunch meeting at North Lanarkshire Council headquarters.

Members of the planning and environment committee will meet at Motherwell Civic Centre at 11am to consider a controversial proposal which could see the A-listed building converted into flats.

And it is understood that planners also will decamp from Motherwell for a site visit on the same day.

The 18th-century hunting lodge had been lying in a disused state for several years when Glasgow-based developers construction firm CHB Developments snapped it up. The developer intends to create ten0 new residential properties on the site, pending planning permission.

However, local pressure group Cumbernauld House Trust want to block the move. Members would ideally like to buy the house so it can be harnessed for use within the community.

The group had lobbied for the planning meeting to be held in Cumbernauld but NLC stressed that exceptions could not be made as regards the location.
