Cumbernauld boy dies in Spain

A THREE year old boy from Cumbernauld has died after a tragic accident in a swimming pool while on hoilday in Spain, it has emerged at time of going to press.

Ewan Bryce passed away in the intensive care unit of Alicante General Hospital on Sunday night.

Little Ewan had been staying with his family at an apartment complex on the Costa Blanca. The accident happened two days before the family were due to fly back home. The child is believed to have suddenly fallen into the pool on the one occasion he had not been wearing a life jacket.

Mum Stella (35) is reported to have dived into the pool to save her son while dad Derek (36) gave the child mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Ewan was taken to a hospital in Torrevieja but was quickly transferred to the specialist unit where he was kept on a ventilator for two days as safety tests were run. It has been reported that doctors came to the conclusion that there was nothing they could do for Ewan.

The couple have made the heartbreaking decision to donate Ewan’s organs to a critically ill child in Madrid. Meanwhile their next task is to have little Ewan’s body flown home.

Derek is reported to have said: “The message I have to other parents is: never take it for granted for one second that this wouldn’t happen. Never let your children out of your sight.”
