Cumbernauld pitch in ribbons after drivers ruin surface with their wheels

Police were called to a pitch in Cumbernauld after horrified footballers realised that £10,000 worth of damage had been caused to its surface .

Officers are now on the hunt for the drivers who have caused “substantial” disruption at the Dowanhill Road sports complex.

The incident which is thought to have taken place overnight last Tuesday had seen the carefully tended pitch torn up by drivers who should not have been anywhere near its surface.

The incident bears the hallmarks of an episode at Kilsyth Sports Field last month when another North Lanarkshire Council-owned pitch suffered extensive damage.

Boy racers in modified cars had planned online to do the deed before their arrival.

Those responsible even stooped to baiting users Kilsyth Amateurs when the team showcased the damage on their Facebook page.

It is not clear if the same individuals were involved in this incident, but whoever is responsible has temporarily robbed sports fans of this much-used amenity.

A police spokesman confirmed: “Substantial disruption has been caused for the teams involved and their organisers.”

A council spokesman added: “This is one of seven pitches and users have been allocated other pitches.

“We are looking at ways to prevent any recurrence from happening and would appeal to anyone with information to contact police.”
