A fall in Cumbernauld Glen in January 2010 saw Father Joseph McAuley (66) sustain horrific facial injuries. The parish priest of St Lucy’s in Abronhill had tripped over a bench which had been left in undergrowth. His injuries were so severe that he was unable to undertake his pastoral duties for three months.

Father McAuley, who is a former lawyer, launched a personal injuries action against the Scottish Wildlife Trust whose lawyers first claimed that the priest was at fault . However, they have since agreed to pay damages to avoid a court hearing.
