An investigation has begun at Cumbernauld’s Royal Mail depot after a van driver was arrested on Monday.

The 28-year-old man from Moodiesburn had crashed while trying to steer a works van round Back o’ Hill Roundabout near Craiglinn Park Road’s BP garage at 8.30am. No other vehicles were involved.

Police were called to the scene and the driver undertook a breath test at the roadside. This proved positive and the man was arrested.

He was then taken to hospital as a precaution but was subject to a later breath test with the approved intoximeter device

Once again, this showed that the employee had been driving over the legal alcohol limit.

He was cautioned and charged with drink driving.

The man was released and a report on this incident has been sent to the procurator fiscal.

It has also emerged that disciplinary action has already swung into play against the employee at the Royal Mail depot in South Muirfield Road.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a postman from Cumbernauld delivery office has been precautionary suspended following a road traffic accident on Monday morning when he was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

“An internal investigation is taking place.”
