Cumbernauld shortlisted in “best town” awards

CUMBERNAULD has been unexpectedly shortlisted in a competition which aims to recognise Scotland’s best towns.

The town which has won the notorious Carbuncle award twice would seem to be shedding its concrete jungle tag - and is competing with the likes of Linlithgow, Peebles and Dunkeld in the 2012 Civic Pride section of the Scottish Design Awards.

We understand that Cumbernauld has made a strong showing in the process which will reach its conclusion at a glitzy ceremony on May 25 at Glasgow’s SAS Radisson Hotel.

Judges will have seven towns to chose from on the night - in a move which has the potential to change the way Cumbernauld is viewed in Scotland and beyond.

John Glenday, one of the competition’s organisers, said: “These awards are really the antithesis to the Carbuncle awards. The very real community spirit that exists in Cumbernauld really shone through.”
