However, the town’s biggest landlord, Sanctuary Cumbernauld stepped in. They instructed contractor Graham to undertake roofing work that has made the decades old complex watertight again.

This was achieved by complex timber and scaffolding works by the staff who worked through all weathers to get the job done.

The YMCA’s chief executive Eleanor Campbell said: “We want to thank Sanctuary and Graham. For the past couple of years we’ve been frustrated by wet weather affecting areas inside the building, effectively restricting what we were available to offer.

‘‘We look forward to organising more activities and events across Cumbernauld,’’ she added.

Roddy Macdonald who is Sanctuary Scotland’s head of development said: “We are happy to have helped the YMCA to resolve an issue that has affected the building for years.

“This is another example of a Sanctuary development offering a community benefit over and above high quality housing.

Sanctuary recently unveiled 58 new homes in nearby Ainslie Road and Maclehose Road and are also building in Seafar.
