Death of former provost ‘huge loss’

A FORMER provost of North Lanarkshire has passed away at the age of 84.

Pat Connelly died on Wednesday, January 20, at his Motherwell home.

He represented the ward of Forgewood, Motherwell, and was first elected to local government in 1992.

Provost of North Lanarkshire Jim Robertson, said: “I was very saddened to hear of the death of my long-time friend and former Provost of North Lanarkshire Pat Connelly. Pat was a real character, a great man with a tremendous sense of humour and a brilliant storyteller.

“I have so many fond memories of Pat. He was a great ambassador for North Lanarkshire who was committed to helping improve the lives of others.

“He will be hugely missed and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Councillor Jim McCabe, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, added: “I was extremely sorry to learn of Pat’s death. Pat remains a legend in North Lanarkshire Council.

“His manner and the way in which he could handle difficult situations as provost was second to none and he is a huge loss to the community.’’
