Demand increasing on Cumbernauld unemployed workers’ centre

A LOCAL charity which supports unemployed people is struggling to cope with current levels of demand.

Cumbernauld Unemployed Workers Centre provides free help and advice on many issues relating to unemployment, but the number and complexity of cases grows daily.

Manager Denis Hackett said: “It’s a nightmare situation. It was worrisome a year ago, but currently things are worse than they ever were in all the time I’ve been with the Unemployed Workers movement.

“It’s worse now than when it was under Thatcher when people were marching in the streets against benefits cuts.”

In the Westminster constituency of Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East, 7.4 per cent of men and 2.6 per cent of women are out of work, a total of 2,700 people.
