Demoltion paves way for new homes in Cumbernauld

Freedom City Church vacated Seafar House two months ago to allow building work to get underway, after the congregation secured Dunnswood House in Wardpark as its new home.

The former Seafar House site will be transformed into 96 modern flats when construction work gets underway in the spring.

These new two-bedroom homes will accommodate former Sanctuary Cumbernauld tenants who are currently living in high-rises in Allanfauld Road.

All the tower blocks which have dominated Cumbernauld’s skyline for decades are earmarked for demolition as part of the massive project - which is arguably most sizeable development in Cumbernauld for many years.

A total of 31 families have already been accomodated in new homes in Fleming Road, as the initial stages got underway.

Sanctuary was able to buy the entire development site earlier this year thanks to a £1 million Scottish Government grant. Holyrood is also footing the cost of the demolition itself.

Sanctuary in Scotland’s director Gordon Laurie said: “The demolition of Seafar House is progressing well.

“This is the latest step in Sanctuary’s commitment to improving Cumbernauld’s affordable housing stock and we look forward to building more homes in future,” he added.
