Dog owners make most of free chips

Along with UK vet charity PDSA, the council held five events in Airdrie, Viewpark, Wishaw, Kilsyth and Cumbernauld offering free chipping and health checks.

The events are part of the council’s Enough’s Enough campaign to promote responsible pet ownership, including caring for animals, cleaning up dog fouling, and keeping dogs under control in public.

“Our partnership with PDSA offers practical help to dog owners across North Lanarkshire, including advice, information and tips on how to care for their pets,” said Councillor Helen McKenna, convener of the environmental services committee.

“The events were very popular with hundreds of pet owners coming along to see our animal welfare officers and the PDSA vet nurse. One of the things our officers talked to owners about was the importance of cleaning up after their dogs when they foul.

“Fouling is a real health hazard, especially for young children, which is highlighted in our Enough’s Enough campaign. And our message is clear, clean up after your dog or face a fine.”

PDSA vet nurse Jen Clarke said: “I was delighted to meet so many dedicated owners and their pets when I visited North Lanarkshire recently.

“The PetCheck tour is part of PDSA’s mission to improve pet welfare, helping every pet to have a happy and healthy life.

Micro chipping means dogs can be traced back to their owners if they get lost. The service is available throughout the year at a cost of £8.
