Don't let fly-tippers get away with it

Mark Findlay, assistant business manager pollution control at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Officers from North Lanarkshire Council regularly monitor the area around Lumloch Road to check for fly-tipping and, where it is on council land, we arrange for it to be uplifted. It is also very useful if residents who see incidents of fly-tipping report it to us.

“Members of the public can report fly-tipping to our customer contact centre, Northline, on 01698 403110 or online at www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk.”

He added that when fly-tipping occurs on private land the council will write to notify land owners of the problem and provide them with advice and assistance.

He explained: “Part of the problem at Lumloch Road, however, is that some of the rubbish is dumped on private land which local authorities cannot clear up. North Lanarkshire Council officers can provide advice and assistance to individuals attempting to protect their land from fly tipping. The council will also routinely write to notify private landowners that their land has been fly tipped on, along with providing some basic suggestions for prevention.

“We will continue to take action ourselves, and in partnership with neighbouring authorities, to address the problem but communities have an important role to play in detection and prevention of fly tipping.

“We would advise residents never to approach anyone they see fly tipping but if they can provide us with any details of the vehicle, the date and time, and description of the people involved, this can help us identify those responsible. Fly tipping is a crime and anyone caught faces a Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 or prosecution.”
