TRAGEDY was narrowly avoided when the rear windscreen of a Cumbernauld man’s car was smashed by a stone thrown from a footbridge in Abronhill.

Sergeant Jacquie Stuart, of Cumbernauld Police Office, said: “This was a particularly frightening incident for all involved and those responsible for it may have thought that there was no harm in throwing a few stones and smashing a few windows.

“However, this incident could have resulted in serious injury, not only to the people in the car, but to other car drivers or pedestrians.

“It was only by good luck that no one was injured, however everyone in the car was left shaken by what happened.

“We are following a positive line of inquiry, however we would ask anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and speak to police.”
