Elderly targeted in cruel bank frauds

POLICE in Cumbernauld have narrowed down their search for a suspected bogus caller.

They revealed that a young woman has been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with the bank frauds.

Between November 30 and December 6 last year four incidents of fraud which targeted elderly people in Cumbernauld were reported.

In each of the cases the victim received a telephone call from the alleged fraudster, who claimed to be from the person’s bank and informed the resident that there was a problem with their debit or credit card.

During the call, the fraudster gained personal information and bank details before telling the victims that a representative from the bank would soon attend the person’s house to pick up the ‘faulty’ card.

Some time later that mystery person would then show up at the house and leave with the card before residents realised it was a scam.

Inspector John Ferguson, Cumbernauld police said: “All of these incidents were committed using familiar methods, targeting elderly people and then using information gathered over the phone, asking details and obtaining various debit and credit cards.

“The cards were collected by sending people to the house. We can confirm that a 22-year-old female has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal regarding the four cases in the Cumbernauld area.

“We always advise not to give out any details over the phone.

“Banks never ask for this type of information over the phone and I would ask anyone who is suspicious in an incident such as this to contact their bank or the police.”
