End of an era as count moved to Motherwell
For decades, Cumbernauld’s Tryst Centre is the place where would-be Westminster politicians have learned their fate.
It has transpired however that the centre will never be used again for this purpose.
In a blow to locally based party activists, the results of the General Election will be announced elsewhere.
It’s been confirmed that Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell will host the General Election count for the first time and that ballot papers will be rushed to the complex as soon as the polls close at 10pm on Thursday March 7.
A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council confirmed that Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East would be one of four Lanarkshire constituencies involved in the count - and rejected suggestion that locals were not being accommodated.
He was also unable to confirm at what point the result was expected.
