Energy efficiency measures for tenants

COUNCIL tenants are set to benefit from £11m worth of energy efficiency measures which are being introduced to keep homes warm and heating bills more affordable.

North Lanarkshire Council have announced plans this year to improve homes by replacing 2,000 heating systems with new modern, cost effective and efficient ones; installing loft insulation in over 3,000 homes and 700 homes benefitting from replacement thermally efficient double glazing windows.

Tower blocks have also been overclad to make them more comfortable and easier to heat.

The local authority has invested over £35m over the past three years improving the energy efficiency of tenants home.

In addition to North Lanarkshire Council’s investment, £1.8m of funding has been secured for insulation works from the Scottish Government’s Universal Home Insulation Scheme (UHIS) since its inception in 2010/2011.

Councillor Sam Love, convener of housing and social work services, said: “We’ve always placed a high priority on investing and improving the energy efficiency of our housing stock, and we’re making significant improvements. “We’re improving energy advice and fuel poverty information available to tenants and residents; we’re carrying out feasibility studies on the use of renewable technology; establishing an annual fuel poverty awareness event and continuing to provide and improve services to help people maximise their income.

“Our key aim is to ensure everyone has access to affordable and warm homes and we’ve set out how we are going to make a difference and build on the progress we’ve already made.”
