North Lanarkshire Council took the decision to close the facility in February as part of its budget process for the year ahead.

Residents will be able to use the larger Wardpark centre which is open seven days a week, Monday to Saturday from 7am-6pm and Sunday from 7am-5.30pm.

Councillor Michael McPake, convener of the Infrastructure Committee, said: “The council operates another six household waste recycling centres across North Lanarkshire, which is well above the requirements for local authorities.

“We have installed new machinery at our centres which increases the capacity within skips and makes the service more efficient.

“I appreciate the closure of Westfield may cause some inconvenience to local residents, however the investment in the service overall will deliver an improved service.”

Details of the six household waste recycling centres and the services they provide are available on the council’s website by visiting www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/bins.
