Double delay in Cumbernauld town centre

Cumbernauld has been dealt a double blow after it emerged that locals face a greater wait for two long-awaited innovations in the town centre.

North Lanarkshire Council admits it still has no start date for the bus centre project which was supposed to get underway a month ago.

And now it emerges that a much-anticipated gym complex will not open until the summer.

This is despite the original plan stating that the complex would open in ‘early 2017’

The company Xercise4Less has admitted that the process of converting long defunct shop units in Forth Walk is proving to be less straightforward than was originally thought.

Its director of Property and Construction Darren Pallett admitted: “We are fully committed to bringing our award winning gym concept to Cumbernauld as we further continue our expansion in Scotland.

““Unfortunately, due to unforseen additional works that our landlord is having to undertake the delivery of our shell unit this has resulted in a delay to the commencement of our £1 million fit out and therefore a delayed opening to the summer.”

The landlord in question is Hamcap which now owns the older part of the town centre in its entirety.

A spokesman said that works to accommodate the gym are those that can be seen from the carriageway in Central Way.

He added: “This element of the works is due to be completed before the end of the month.

“They are unconnected with the proposed bus station works.”

There had been some speculation that the works were being undertaken to undertake a structural fault in this part of the centre but North Lanarkshire Council has stressed that this has no basis in fact.

NLC also pointed out that this had no bearing on the delay to the bus station works.

The council said that the full legal framework is not in place for the works to start, despite flagging up a start date to bus companies who had arranged for diversions to take place.
