Historic milestone for Langriggs

The green heart of Cumbernauld Village is now protected forever, thanks to the partnership between national charity Fields in Trust and Cumbernauld Village Action for the Community (CVAC).

By taking part in the Queen Elizabeth Fields Challenge CVAC is making their much loved space part of the fabric of the community for generations to come.

With the Duke of Cambridge’s patronage, and the support of principal partner Asda, the Challenge is a living legacy programme to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.

The Langriggs was chosen as a suitable community space due to its history and is one of four in North Lanarkshire and one of 2,012 in the United Kingdom.

Over the last few years much work has been carried out by CVAC and local residents, including the maintenance of the Commonwealth War Graves in the Cemetery, the wildflower beds and enlarging the community orchard – but more volunteers are needed to continue these projects.

Fields in Trust Scotland manager Colin Rennie said: “Community green spaces such as this play such a vital role in maintaining a high quality of life for those around them.”

CVAC was given an award from the Trust, and the plaque commemorating this has been inset into a standing stone in the Langriggs, donated by the council.

A fundraising family fun night is being held on Friday next week at 7.30pm in the Bowling Club in the Village to help keep the effort going.
