A step in the right direction

A GROUP of parents who are campaigning for safety improvements to be made to an access route of a Kilsyth school have received some welcome good news.

In November we reported that nearly 100 parents signed a petition to have work done to the 18 stairs leading to Balmalloch Primary from Neilston Walk, also known as ‘The High Line’.

The steps are regularly strewn with broken glass, left by teen drinkers, while poor drainage means water cascades down them and freezes in cold weather.

Now Chris Flanigan, public-private patnership contracts manager at North Lanarkshire Council, has confirmed to councillor Jean Jones that the drainage system is to be upgraded.

Mum Catherine Struthers (41), of Montrose Gardens, helped organise the petition.

She said: “We’re pleased something is happening to address some of the problems but the general consensus is that we still want something done about the other issues.

“The stuff we’ve got to step over on the way to school is disgusting. We just want the children to get to school safely.

Councillor Jean Jones said: “I am delighted that a new drain will be put in this area and hope this will help.”
