Why Cumbernauld took the top title

Cumbernauld’s reputation is rather unfairly based on the old shopping centre but, thanks to the work of the Cumbernauld Environmental Society and associated organisations, the beautiful surroundings really came to the fore.

That helped Beautiful Cumbernauld to the Small City Trophy, beating Dunfermline in Bloom by 2 points.

One factor was the obvious enthusiasm of the Scottish Wildlife Trust for the Living Landscape Project .

And if the links with the local authority, the Cumbernauld Environment Project and the other related organisations can be achieved then we think that this project will become a template for other towns and cities too.
