AN AMBITIOUS housing re-development project which will affect thousands of locals has moved forward following a key meeting at North Lanarkshire Council headquarters.

The multi-storey blocks in Seafar and Kildrum which have dominated Cumbernauld’s skyline for more than four decades have been made the subject of a compulsory purchase order – a move which sees demolition of the flats edge a step closer.

Although the massive project has still to gain planning permission, last week’s development at the planning and transportation committee is something of a milestone in the project.

Landlord Sanctuary Cumbernauld has said it will attempt to buy out all owners on a voluntary basis.

However, the CPOs are thought to be required so that all flats and lock-ups can be acquired, allowing the development to progress without any hitches.

Last year the bulk of residents voted to have the landmark high-rises bulldozed and replaced with new homes via a £70 million cash injection from the Scottish Government and Sanctuary Cumbernauld.

The project, if approved, will provide around 445 new flats to the town, in what is being seen as a boost for affordable social housing.
