Former Scotswoman of the Year Janet celebrates landmark birthday

Many readers will recognise Janet Walker – who is known by some in the town as Sheena – as a former Scotswoman of the Year, Cumbernauld Citizen of the Year and is also an MBE. And now she is an octogenarian too!

The Carrickstone woman has made a huge difference to youngsters with special needs and consequently, their families.

Janet, who hails from Maryhill, worked with the Scottish Society for Mentally Handicapped people, which is now called Enable – and managed three day centres in the area. Following her retirement she was also involved in voluntary work with Enable’s homes, the Crossroads Care Scheme and respite care in Kilsyth.

The great-grandmother’s special day started with a glass of bubbly round at her son Jim’s house in King’s Drive, and then a slap-up meal followed at Glenskirlie House.

After that it was all back to Jim’s for more champers and the breathtaking fireworks display.

Grand-daughter Victoria said that Janet was in her element because she loves being with her nearest and dearest.

She added: “It was a great day. My grandma is a strong character who is very caring and family- orientated.’’
