Foundry refurb aims to appeal to all ages

Locals were invited to drop in and check out the new multi-million pound refurb.

Street dance, health and fitness classes, football for youngsters and bookbug sessions are among the regular activities on offer at the new complex.

This week sees the end of the first phase of work to be carried out in the building.

Phase two is already in progrees for a car park and landscaping work at the front of the building due to complete this spring, costing a further £1.1m. Upgrading of the sports hall changing areas and work on the roof will follow.

The new Barrhead Foundry gives residents access to a first-class library, enhanced sports facilities, digital hub, café, business centre and free wifi. The centre will provide a members only area for local business people or those looking to start their own businesses, where they can get support and advice.

There are also flexible meeting spaces for local organisations and community groups, and a soft play area for children.

The entire project is expected to be finished before September this year.

East Renfrewshire community services convener Mary Montague said: “We have created a fabulous venue that I believe people will instinctively want to visit. The space is exciting. We have a library that brings reading and learning to life.

Infrastrucure convenor Tony Buchanan added: “At £3.8m we are making a significant investment in Barrhead.”
