Gardening project to remember them

Ambitious plans to commemorate the centenary of World War One are set to get underway locally through a landscape gardening project.

Cumbernauld Environmental Society will team up with other local groups to plant a laurel bush for every man from the parishes of Condorrat and Cumbernauld Village who gave up his life in the Great War.

The group also intends to harness the symbolic power of the flower of Flanders by planting poppy seeds in a specially earmarked space.

Cumbernauld Community Park is being mooted as a possible venue for the initiative which will be run as a community project for all ages. It’s also hoped that schools will get involved as part of a history project.

A date has yet to be set for the meeting but will appear in an upcoming edition of this newspaper.

The Government is planning its own nationwide commemorations for the centenary which will include a giant ceremony for Commonwealth leaders in Glasgow.
