Gas drill plans cause a stink

A PLANNING application for gas exploration in Moodiesburn has been withdrawn after provoking an unprecedented public backlash.

Plans had been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council in November last year by Gas exploration company, Reach Coal Seam Gas, seeking permission to vertically drill part of the ground at the Devro Factory in Moodiesburn, to search for methane gas that could be used as energy.

Residents initially seemed unaware of the application, despite a small public notice being placed in the Kirkintilloch Herald around the same time the plans were submitted.

However, over the past two weeks North Lanarkshire Council’s eplanning website has been bombarded with objections and comments on the plans, the sheer number of which appears to have forced the application to have been withdrawn.
