Get in a bidfor a greentomorrow

Local groups able to prove they could turn derelict land into a valuable community asset can apply for a share of a £500,000 green cash grant.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth organisations are being urged to apply for funds from the Central Scotland Green Network Development Fund.

It aims to kick start projects considered likely to transform the quality of life for people living and working in the Central Belt.

Environment and climate change minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “Projects which receive funding will be those that can deliver a contribution to the economy and improve the quality of life for local communities through transforming, for example, vacant and derelict pieces of land and furthering active travel opportunities across the central belt.”

Over the past five years, the fund has supported more than 150 projects with almost £5.3 million.

Keith Geddes, Chair of the Central Scotland Green Network Trust, said: “We are encouraging organisations in North Lanarkshire to apply for funding to bring previously unused pieces of vacant and derelict land back into beneficial use, and this year’s fund is also looking for projects which deliver a boost to active travel and improve the lives of disadvantaged communities.”

The closing date for applications to the fund is November 26. For further information visit www.csgn.org.uk
