Gifts pour in for our wounded heroes

Last week we put the spotlight on Kilsyth mum Josephine Burke whose daughter Liz flew out to work as a nurse at the tented field hospital at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province.

The 57-year-old retired recruitment consultant asked for our help in collecting shoeboxes full of goodies for soldiers - which will be saved in a 'bank' then distributed to the wounded.

Soldiers rushed in for treatment can wait several days for their personal effects to catch up with them and your donations could plug that gap.

But a cash gift to help Josephine buy these items has proved to be equally acceptable.

Shoppers at Somerfield in Kilsyth rallied round when she staged a bucket appeal for the goods over a two day period.

And she has already spent every penny on items like socks, underpants, shower gels, razors, and shaving foam.

"I actually emptied a whole rail of tee shirts," said Josephine who is receiving the donations at her home in 23 Kingston Road.

"I have also received donations from friends of family members so I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who donated.

"People had read the story and came up to me and said: 'We know what you are doing,' then made a donation so I am very grateful,'' added Josephine.

Readers should note that the News office at 10-12 Tay Walk., Cumbernauld is acting as a drop-off point for donations.

All items must be first-hand and donors are reminded that no aerosol products or canned goods can be sent by post. Crisps and sweets would also be welcomed.
