Greenfaulds explorers off on an African adventure

PUPILS from Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld are not putting their feet up after their exams – they're off on an African adventure.

The group of 12 eager explorers are travelling to Uganda and Kenya for five weeks with World Challenge, a UK-based school expedition specialist. While there, they will be undertaking building and renovation work in communities, as well as teaching English.

EDF Energy is sponsoring the pupils to carry out work on an orphanage.

Hannah Marshall (16) said: "There will be a teacher with us, as well as a guide, but they are only there to advise us and take care of health and safety. We will have to organise everything else ourselves.

"We are all really excited and can't wait to get to work; we just hope we can make a difference in the time we are there. The donation from EDF Energy will greatly assist in the work we will be doing and we are all very grateful for the support we received."

Hannah's father, Jim Marshall, is group head of electrical systems at EDF Energy's Scottish HQ in East Kilbride.

Jim said: "I am personally very proud of Hannah and delighted that my company has been able to support the team and trust our contribution will make a real difference to the lives of people in Kenya/Uganda.

"EDF Energy has supplied some materials for the schools – pens, pencils and notebooks – things which we take for granted.

"Hannah has also promised to write and article for our internal magazine when she returns and my colleagues are looking forward to hearing about her African adventures."
