Have your say on community councils

THE future role of community councils is under the spotlight in a consultation exercise being run by North Lanarkshire Council.

The council has published a new Scheme for Community Councils and a Code of Conduct for Community Councillors – and it's looking for your views on how this can help the voice of local people be heard better.

The proposals are based on the principles agreed by the Scottish Government, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and the Association of Scottish Community Councils, following a review of the way community councils operate.

Councillor William Hogg, convener of corporate services, said: "The 48 community councils in North Lanarkshire play an important role, representing the views of local residents on a range of issues and encouraging a sense of civic pride.

"Councils consult with community councils on planning applications and other developments, and we work in partnership with them to deliver better communities.

"We want to develop the role of community councils to support the many people who give their own time to make their community a better place to live.

"So this consultation is an important opportunity to have your say on how community councils are set up and run in future. I would encourage as many people as possible to contribute to the consultation."
