East Dunbartonshire Council is looking for people to come forward to become foster carers.

The council is relaunching its ‘People like you Fostercare’ campaign, which was a success last year.

Around 40 children and young people come into care each year in the area.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell, convener of the Social Work Committee, was joined by members of the Council’s Care Planning and Placement Team to officially launch this year’s campaign.

He said: “We are facing a shortage in the number of foster carers, both nationally and locally, and we need more people to come
forward.

“There are many myths about who can become a foster carer. What really matters is someone has the commitment, skills and ability to look after children separated from their own families, and to offer them a safe and nuturing home.

Foster care can be challenging but very rewarding work and carers can make a positive difference.”

The council says it welcomes inquiries from individuals or couples of all cultures and backgrounds.

Almost anyone can apply, but potential foster carers must have a spare room.

Children and young people need foster care for a variety of reasons when they are not able to remain at home in the care of their birth families. Foster carers can provide care in emergencies, for just a few days, a weekend or longer periods.

Regular support is provided, as well as training. Both a fee and allowance will be paid to cover the cost of caring.
