Help for Forces personnel

At the event he welcomed armed forces support organisations and charities, who were on hand to give practical advice to serving and former serving personnel.

The session aimed to flag up the range of support services available to people who could be facing a variety of potential difficulties in civilian life .

Mr Griffin said he was committed to carrying on work on a cross-party basis to ensure that veterans and their families receive the support they need and deserve.

Groups represented at the Cumbernauld event along with Royal British Legion Scotland included the Armed Forces Advice Project run by the Citizens Advice Bureau, the organisation Combat Stress, North Lanarkshire Council and the Erskine veterans’ charity.

Mr Griffin said: “It’s an honour to be the Labour shadow minister for veterans, and to be able to play my part in supporting our veterans for Armed Forces Day.

“I know from my time in the armed forces that while the majority of people settle easily (after leaving the forces some find it difficult to adjust to life outside the military community.

“I was extremely grateful to the Cumbernauld Royal British Legion for hosting the surgery, and to all of the support services who made themselves available.”
