Hotbed of science

A CUMBERNAULD school has been branded a hotbed of science and engineering talent after winning a nationwide competition held at Glasgow City Chambers last week.

These S2 pupils from St Maurice’s High School took part in a ten-week programme to design an eco-class of the future – and represented the whole of Lanarkshire on a short list.

They faced a panel of judges from the Engineering Development Trust who quizzed them about the methods that led to the finished product – and must have been doing something right.

Although the event had involved 11 schools from across Scotland the laurels came back to St Maurice’s, after judges were impressed by the ingenuity of the youngsters involved. And it’s felt that they are a real credit to Cumbernauld.

Baillie James McNally of Glasgow City Council said: “These young people I met from St Maurice’s can be rightly proud of their achievements.

“Far from being the end of a process, the Scottish final marks the start of a lifetime of opportunities to apply the skills they have developed to benefit our communities and planet,” he added.

St Maurice’s headteacher Laurie Byrne said that the pupils had done‘‘brilliantly well’’. He said: “I am thrilled. We are very proud of their achievement and the honour this award brings to the school.”
