Jingle bells for safety campaign

The Safer Christmas Campaign came to the Antonine Shopping Centre last week and involved young people - who are 16+ Hub members, which is part of the North Area Learning Hub.

Hundreds of purse bells, UV torches and UV marking pens were distributed on the day, and it is hoped that people will use the devices to ensure they are not a victim of crime.

Police constable Michael Duffy, of Cumbernauld’s Safer Communities department, said:”This event was the end of our four week Safer Communities Campaign.

“Throughout this period we have been working beside the North Area Learning Hub in tackling various issues including drugs and alcohol education

“We also looked at some of the problems that younger people may face within their local communities.”

He added: “The Safer Christmas Campaign involved the 16+ hub members engaging with the general public in Cumbernauld.

“We decided that it would be a good idea to distribute purse bells due to there being a real possibility that people may be targeted in the run up to Christmas.

“These bells if used correctly are effective and will lessen the opportunity for would-be perpetrators.

“A large number of UV pens and torches were also handed out and it is a good idea to mark your property as this will make your items more personal and identifiable.”
